BCS Certificate in CST: Support for the Certificate

Some teachers may wish to have additional support to help  them work towards the Certificate. These three courses are designed as optional additions to the Certificate for those teachers who need more guidance and instruction to meet the standard required.

These courses will run on weekday evenings from October to December. Each course will take place online using the Certificate Learning Environment and will consist of weekly webinars, plus tasks to do each week.

Scratch for Part 2 (Primary)

8 week course - 1 ½ hours twilight  online course with 3 hours homework a week.

Audience: This course is for primary teachers who have limited experience of computer science both in terms of  knowledge of the underlying concepts and also limited experience teaching programming. They may have taught ICT in the past, perhaps using programmable toys and control products.

Course description: This course provides theory and practical activities to support teachers undertaking Part 2, the programming Project, of the BCS Certificate in Computing Science Teaching (Primary). Topics will include: computational thinking, unplugged pedagogy, using programmable toys to teach fundamental concepts, and programming constructs and debugging will be explored through tasks and lesson activities. Ideas for programming projects will be explored and support provided to develop projects. Scratch will be introduced and used as the programming language for most activities. Progression, assessment and alternative programming languages will also be discussed.

Python for Part 2 (Secondary)

This 8-week course will help secondary teachers to work towards developing a programming project in Python suitable for Part 2 (Secondary). Topics will include selection, iteration, using functions and file handling, as well as what you need to know to tackle developing a project of your own in Python.

Pedagogy for Part 3 (Secondary)

This 5-week course running on alternate weeks will cover approaches to teaching programming and other aspects of Computing.  It will also look at how to carry out a classroom investigation suitable for Part 3. Topics to be covered in terms of pedaogy will include: reading before you write in programming, unplugged strategies, visual to text strategies, contextualisation, use of analogy and collaborative working. in terms of developing your Part 3 project, we will look at how investigations work, establishing a suitable topic, planning your intervention, using observation as data and writing up your Part 3.
